Securing UltimateSearch/UltimateSpell Directories
Is it possible/recommended to secure the UltimateSearchInclude and UltimateSpellInclude to authenticated users in the web.config?

I don't wany any user to be able to access the admin pages in those directories, but I don't want to break the crawler.

You can update the following settings in UltimateSearch.config, and give full permission to ASPNET user (NETWORK SERVICE on Windows 2003) on the following directories:

<add key="indexDirectory" value="~/UltimateSearchInclude/YourHiddenIndexFolder" />
<add key="logDirectory" value="~/UltimateSearchInclude/YourHiddenLogFolder" />

You can also move your Admin page to a special folder such as "~/UltimateSearchInclude/YourHiddenAdminFolder/UltimateSearch.admin.aspx" />

It's not the issue of how to secure the admin page, but the way (just setting authenticated user) it secure does not match policy. We do not want that UltimateSearchInclude esp the Admin folder available (whether authenticated or not) in the same port of the website.

Re: Securing UltimateSearch/UltimateSpell Directories

There could be a workaround to achieve your goal by following the steps below:

1) Create a new web app such as IndexApp, and copy the bin folder from your web app into this one.

2) Create an UltimateSearchInclude folder under the root of IndexApp.

3) Move the Admin folder from the UltimateSearchInclude folder of your original app to the UltimateSearchInclude folder of IndexApp.

4) On IIS, right-click on IndexApp/UltimateSearchInclude and create a virtual directory called Index and point it to the physical folder of the UltimateSearchInclude\Index directory of your original app. Do the same for the Log directory.

Now you can set up any port you wish for your IndexApp. Whenever you open the admin page, and index your app, it should generate the index and log files under your original app.
