Object reference error while indexing
Hello,

We are trying to index the pages and docs for our 2 projects. We implement the search tool separately to the projects (separate dlls separate config files etc.) Each project works fine in development server (IIS express) but problem happens in QA server

For the first project;
We can successfully index the pages but when I search, the results look like this

Results 1 - 10 for xxx.
Timeout
Your connection to the database has expired (for security reasons). To re-establish, go back to the login page and login with your user id and password. Votre ...
http://qaIP/xx/yy/xyz.aspx

Links are fine, if I click the link it takes me to the pages but I think during index operation there are some security issues. maybe in IIS ?

For the 2nd Project
I am getting an object reference error while indexing the site.

The indexing starts but then it fails and display an error.

Index operation failed.
Exception Message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Started At: 10:15:40
Finished At: 10:15:45
Indexed Pages: 69

If I try to re-index, then it gives below error

Index operation failed.
Exception Message: The process cannot access the file "D:\Web\...\...\...\UltimateSearchInclude\Index\UltimateSearch.doc.ndx.new" because it is being used by another process.
Started At: 10:18:33
Finished At: 10:18:33
Indexed Pages: 0

In the log file, it looks like indexing started but never finished

Last few logs

1/18/2017 10:15:01 AM, Started indexing full
1/18/2017 10:15:16 AM, Started indexing full
1/18/2017 10:15:28 AM, Started indexing full
1/18/2017 10:15:40 AM, Started indexing full

We gave permission to Network Service user and even everyone(just to be sure)

if you provide an email, I can share more information if needed.

Thanks,
Rasim

Re: Object reference error while indexing
If everything works fine in your development environment, but fails in QA or production, it must be an environmental issue. Either it's a missing installation, wrong setting on IIS such as 32-bit vs 64-bit, session timeout issues, database connections of your application, and so on.

Please note that UltimateSearch doesn't connect to database. So, it must be your app connection timing out or losing connection.

Regarding permissions on the UltimateSearch Index folder, you may try to give permission to Everyone if you think NETWORK SERVICE is not sufficient. However, if that were the case you wouldn't see any files generated in that folder to begin with.
